FAQs

Martial Arts

What is TKD?

TKD is a child-focused, modern adaptation of traditional Taekwondo, a martial art known for its dynamic kicks, fast footwork, and disciplined philosophy. It’s more than just self-defence, it’s a powerful way to build confidence, focus, resilience, and respect. At London TKD, we use Taekwondo to inspire children to become stronger in body and mind.

Are martial arts safe for children?

Absolutely. At London TKD, safety is our top priority. Our instructors are highly trained professionals who create a structured, supportive, and positive environment where children can thrive. All our classes are age-appropriate, carefully supervised, and designed to build confidence step by step.

Will my child get hurt?

As with any physical activity, minor bumps can happen – but our instructors take great care to minimise risk. We teach control, respect, and awareness from day one, and students only progress when they’re ready. Protective equipment is used where needed, and safety is always built into the way we teach.

What are the benefits of martial arts for children?

The benefits go far beyond fitness and self-defence. Our students develop:

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Focus and discipline
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Respect for others
  • Leadership and communication skills

Martial arts lay the foundation for success – in school, in sport, and in life.

My child isn’t very sporty. Is this still for them?

Yes! Many of our students start with no experience in sport or martial arts. Our classes are welcoming and inclusive, and every child progresses at their own pace. We focus on effort, attitude, and personal growth – not just natural ability.

Will my child have to spar or fight?

Not unless they’re ready – and even then, it’s introduced gradually, with full supervision and protective gear. Sparring is a valuable tool for learning control, timing, and strategy but it’s always taught in a safe, respectful, and structured way. Keep in mind that we only allow light contact and prohibit contact to the head.

Our students learn respect, not aggression – and they gain the tools to stand tall, think clearly, and respond wisely in any situation.

How does TKD support my child’s development outside of class?

Not unless they’re ready – and even then, it’s introduced gradually, with full supervision and protective gear. Sparring is a valuable tool for learning control, timing, and strategy but it’s always taught in a safe, respectful, and structured way. Keep in mind that we only allow light contact and prohibit contact to the head.

Our students learn respect, not aggression – and they gain the tools to stand tall, think clearly, and respond wisely in any situation.

TKD teaches transferable life skills: concentration in the classroom, respect at home, and confidence in new situations. Parents often tell us they see noticeable improvements in behaviour, focus, and resilience within weeks of starting.

How does the Belt system work?

Belts represent your child’s progress along their Blackbelt Journey. Each new belt marks a step forward – a reflection of their growing skill, focus, and commitment.

Our belt system provides clear structure and achievable goals, helping students stay motivated with a sense of purpose and progress. It’s not just about moving up — it’s about developing confidence, resilience, and pride in their own hard work.

What happens at the end of the trial?

No action is required – we’ll automatically enrol your child into our membership subscription. If you do not wish to continue, please contact us to avoid being enrolled into the rolling subscription.

What happens if I miss a class?

If your child misses a class, we’re unable to offer refunds for individual sessions – your subscription reserves their place and supports consistent training.

Regular attendance is essential for a successful Blackbelt Journey, and we kindly ask parents to support this consistency.

What happens if a lesson is cancelled?

If a school club lesson is cancelled (bank holiday, inset day, etc), students receive a credit for a lesson at our nearest Academy location. This ensures students do not fall behind on their learning in the unfortunate event of class cancellations.

Am I tied into a contract?

No, you are not committed to a contract. Our weekly subscriptions may be cancelled at any time. However, we do ask for 30 days’ notice.

How will I know when my child is ready to join the Academy?

Everyone’s journey is a little different. Your child’s Instructor will let you know when your they’re ready to take the next step in their Blackbelt Journey by joining the London TKD Academy.

Upon achieving Redbelt, all students must graduate into the Academy for Advanced classes.

How does the subscription work?

Our termly fee will be spread evenly across all weeks of your child’s school term. This allows us to spread the cost over an affordable termly subscription.

Depending on the length of your child’s school term, this termly fee will vary:

Term-length is calculated from the official start date and end date and includes half-term.

11-week term: £115.5 (11 payments of £10.5)
12-week term: £126 (12 payments of £10.5)
13-week term: £136.5 (13 payments of £10.5)
14-week term: £147 (14 payments of £10.5)
15-week term: £157.5 (15 payments of £10.5)

This translates to a subscription of £10.50 per week for the entire duration of your child’s term, including half-terms.

What happens during half term holidays?

During half term, you will continue to pay your £10.5 weekly subscription. Our payment structure spreads your termly membership fee evenly across each week of the term, including half-terms. This allows us to offer a lower, more consistent weekly fee while keeping your child’s place secure

Hence, although your child will not attend a class during half term, you will be paying towards the overall termly fee.

What happens if my child has a two-week half term?

If your child has a two-week half-term, your subscription will continue as normal during both weeks.

To ensure you’re still paying the correct termly fee, we’ll pause your payments one week earlier at the end of term. This way, you’re never overcharged.

What happens during end-of-term holidays?

There are no charges during the December, April, or summer holidays. Your subscription will be automatically paused during these breaks and will resume when your child returns to school.

Your £12.50 weekly subscription is charged year-round to keep your child’s place secured and ensure consistency across the year. While there is a 2-week break over Christmas, we offer 4 catch-up sessions at your child’s Academy throughout January – completely free of charge.

These extra lessons are a fantastic way to start the year strong, shake off the holiday rust, and make up for missed time. We highly encourage all students to attend and take full advantage of this opportunity.

If your child will be unable to train for an extended period (due to illness, travel, etc.), please let us know – we may be able to pause your subscription.

Do I need a uniform?
